Feeling hot, hot, hot? Stay Sunsafe in the Workplace

As summer unfolds, hot weather, increased outdoor activities, and summer-only seasonal tasks can elevate risks, making it essential for employers and employees to stay vigilant and aware of the associated risks. Here we list some of our top-tips for staying safe for employers and employees:

Practical Measures for Employers:

  • Risk Assessments: Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify summer-specific hazards. Tailor safety protocols to address these challenges, considering the nature of work and the specific environment.
  • Hydration Stations: Ensure easy access to drinking water. Encourage regular hydration breaks, especially for outdoor workers and those in high-temperature environments.
  • Sun Protection: When working outside, provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF. Implement shaded areas for breaks to reduce UV exposure.
  • Reasonable Adjustments: Where appropriate, adjust workwear guidelines to allow looser clothing, short sleeved tops, and the wearing of shorts.
  • Adjust Work Schedules: Modify work schedules to avoid peak heat hours. Consider early morning or late afternoon shifts to minimise heat exposure.
  • Ventilation and Cooling: Enhance ventilation in indoor workspaces. Use fans, air conditioning, or portable cooling units to maintain a comfortable temperature.
  • Training and Awareness: Educate employees on the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and the importance of hydration and sun protection.
  • Monitor Air Quality: Stay informed about air quality levels, especially during heatwaves. Implement measures to protect vulnerable employees, such as providing masks or allowing remote work on days with poor air quality.

Employee Responsibilities:

  • Self-Care: Employees should take personal responsibility for their health by staying hydrated, wearing appropriate clothing, and using sunscreen. They should also report any symptoms of heat stress or allergic reactions immediately.
  • Compliance with Safety Protocols: Adhering to the safety measures and using provided PPE is crucial. Employees should follow the guidance on breaks and avoid overexertion during hot weather.
  • Awareness and Reporting: Stay alert to the signs of heat stress and other summer-related hazards in colleagues. Promptly report any safety concerns or incidents to supervisors.

Managing summer hazards at work is a collective responsibility that requires proactive measures from both employers and employees, so stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!
